Clearwater Fire Called Suspicious
A weekend garage fire in Clearwater has raised suspicions from the State Fire Marshal's Office. The fire happened Sunday night at the Joseph and Natoyia Beasley home in Clearwater.
Authorities say witnesses reported hearing a loud popping noise, and then saw a burst of flames. The homeowners were at home when the fire broke out, but no one was injured. The fire is being called suspicious in nature and is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal's Office along with the Wright County Criminal Investigation Division. A reward is being offered for information leading to the identification of the persons responsible for the fire. Anyone with information is asked to call the Minnesota Arson Hot-Line at 1-800-723-2020.

National Latino AIDS Day Observed Today
Today is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, and in Minnesota, events have been planned to draw attention to what health officials say is a steadily rising HIV infection rate among the state's Latino population. Minnesota Department of Health officials say that Latinos represented 10 percent of all HIV cases reported last year. Minnesota Latinos also had an HIV infection rate nearly 7 times higher than Caucasians. State epidemiologist Dr. Harry Hull says many Latinos have tested late or even years after becoming infected, thereby missing years of beneficial treatment and learning ways to prevent the further spread of the disease. Increased community awareness, early testing and treatment and HIV prevention programs for Latinos in high risk categories are among the plans the MDH has to combat the disease among the Latino population. To find out more, contact the Minnesota AIDSLine at 1-800-248-2437.

Nursing Homes Hit Hardest by Lack of Flu Vaccine
The Minnesota Department of Health and local public health officials have recently completed surveys of communities, clinics, hospitals and nursing homes regarding the unexpected shortage of influenza vaccine. The results indicate that Minnesota is short about 377 thousand doses, mostly from nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. The survey results show that clinics serving families and children have the best supplies of the vaccine, because they primarily ordered a version of the vaccine which covers infants, children, and adults, as opposed to the vaccine in shortest supply which is used only for older children and adults. The MDH says the survey is a significant step towards identifying where vaccines are needed most, but in the meantime, healthy people are being asked to cancel their flu shot appointments in order to make sure people who are most at risk for complications of influenza get their shots. People who should still seek flu shots this year include people 65 or older,
people in nursing homes or other long term care facilities, people with chronic health problems, pregnant women, children and teenagers who take aspirin on a regular basis, infants 6 to 23 months of age, people who live in the same home with children under 6 months and those who provide care to children under six months. Full results of the Minnesota Department of Health flu shot survey can be seen online at www.mdhflu.com.
