Former Buffalo City Council Member Steve Tryggeseth Faces Child Pornography Charges
A former Buffalo City Council member and civic leader faces felony charges of possession of child pornography after the Minnesota Attorney General's office filed those charges this week. 51-year-old Steve Tryggeseth is charged with 10 counts of possession of the child porn on various electronic devices such as computers, and computer storage disks. The initial investigation into allegations of child porn possession began in March after police were informed by an associate of Tryggeseth that he had a personal computer planner device, often called a “PDA” which allegedly contained images of child pornography. Search warrants were executed at Tryggeseth's residence which turned up several devices which allegedly contain the explicit images. The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force assisted local law enforcement in the investigation. Thus far, Tryggeseth has not been arrested, but will have a court appearance on the charges in the near future. The local real estate agent has been an active member of the community of Buffalo. He was elected to the City Council in 1998, and was defeated in a campaign for mayor two years ago. Tryggeseth is also a former Buffalo Chamber of Commerce and Buffalo Lions President.

Late Night Assault and Robbery at Area Restaurant
Wright County Sheriff's Department officials are looking for a man who robbed an area restaurant and assaulted its owner over the weekend. Sheriff Gary Miller says the incident happened shortly after 3 AM Saturday morning at Daniel's Family Restaurant in Cokato. Authorities say the owner of the restaurant, 40-year-old Pam Braatz of Cokato was walking to the back of the building to her car after closing the business when she was confronted from behind by a man with a knife. The man allegedly ordered Braatz to unlock the front door, then pushed her inside the building. The suspect took a small amount of cash from the register, then ordered the owner downstairs to an office where he reportedly took a bank bag with an undisclosed amount of cash, then fled out a back door. Braatz was not seriously injured in the robbery. Deputies searched both the building and immediate areas with a K-9 Unit but were unable to locate the suspect. The man is described as a white male in his mid-20's, about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build and a soft spoken voice. The man was wearing all black at the time of the robbery including a black ski mask. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Wright County Sheriff's Office at (763) 682-1162.

Local Crops Doing Pretty Well Considering Cool Weather
Crops across the Wright County area are generally in pretty good condition at the halfway point of the growing season, especially considering the cooler than average summer we've seen so far. Wright County Farm Service Agency Director Kevin Bergquist says recent timely rains this week should set the stage for a big boost to crops if temperatures take off into normal territory next week. While the corn and soybean crops are a little behind average in many areas, the small grains reportedly are the best in many years thanks to the cooler than average temperatures. Bergquist says its unlikely that crops will be "bin-busters", but if reasonably normal conditions are seen the rest of the growing season, yields should be very good.

Local Red Cross Chapter Relocates, Merges
The local chapter of the American Red Cross has relocated to a new office in Wright County, and has merged with the Central Minnesota Red Cross in St. Cloud. Officials say the new office at 205 Walnut Street in Monticello will offer access for disabled persons, and will be a better location for outreach into northern service areas. Officials say the merger with the larger St. Cloud chapter came after much discussion on how best to handle the ever-growing administrative burden of having an independent chapter. The new phone numbers to call for the Red Cross are (320) 251-7641, or 1-800-560-7641. The local branch will continue to provide emergency services for local residents, as well as many different first aid classes.

Local Youngster Critically Injured in Car-Bicycle Crash Slowly Recovering
A youngster from Rockford Township remains in critical condition at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle in late June. 12-year-old Keaton Bowden was riding his bicycle with his younger brother on June 24th when he came out of a driveway onto Farmington Avenue, and was struck by a northbound car. The boy is reportedly slowly coming out of a drug-induced coma, and is beginning to show signs of responding to requests from doctors. Meanwhile, a benefit fund for the boy's family has been set up with BankWest locations in the area. Contributions may be made at any BankWest office to help the family with medical expenses.

Lovely Weather Made For an Inspiring “Relay For Life”
Beautiful weather Friday evening helped to create a great atmosphere for the largest fundraiser of the year for the local American Cancer Society chapter. The 11th annual Relay For Life was held Friday evening and into this morning at the Buffalo Community Middle School track. 28 teams of walkers raised pledges in return for walking in relay fashion throughout the night around the track lined with candlelit luminarias that honored cancer survivors, and twinkled in memory of those who have lost their struggle with cancer. Though final numbers are not yet in, preliminary numbers from the evening estimate that close to 50 thousand dollars has been raised from donations for the event. A second Relay For Life will be held in St. Michael in early August.

Monticello Riverfest, Waverly Daze Conclude

Two summer celebrations wrapped up Sunday in Monticello and Waverly. Despite some early morning rain on Sunday, the weather cleared in time for parades, music, and other festivities in both communities. In Monticello, Casey Angell was crowned the new Miss Monticello, with Tifani Stang and Kate Roden princesses. Kristine Retka was named Miss Congeniality. The 2004 Monticello Riverfest Medallion Hunt was running all the way to Sunday morning when Alejandro Sanchez of Big Lake found the medallion in some thick brush near a fire hydrant on Minnesota Street. In Waverly, great crowds came out for the weekend events, including the Sunday parade and the crowning of the new Waverly royalty. Miss Waverly 2004 is Sarah Jacobson, and Princess is Blair Sawatzke. The next community celebration in Wright County is this coming weekend as St. Michael celebrates its Heritage Days.

Student Pilot From Rogers Hurt in Plane Crash
A student pilot from our region was injured early Thursday morning in a small plane crash in northwestern Minnesota. The plane, owned by the University of North Dakota, went down in a cornfield near Waubun around 1:30 Thursday morning. UND officials identified the student pilot as Joshua Oreck, an aviation student from Rogers. Oreck was the only occupant of the single engine Piper Warrior, and was flying from Minneapolis to Grand Forks. A resident in the area near the crash site said he heard a low-flying plane circling, followed by the sound of a crash. When authorities arrived and found the crash site, they found that the pilot was thrown about 50 feet from the plane. Officials at a Fargo hospital say however that his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening. The F.A.A. is investigating the cause of the crash.
