'Fun in the Sun' Demands Sunscreen, Other Protective Measures
The lazy days of summer often mean plenty of activity in the outdoors. While those activities should continue to be fun for everyone involved, doctors are also reminding us to be sure to protect skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Today, one in six Americans will develop some type of skin cancer, most commonly from overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. Doctors recommend sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30 or greater, wearing sun-shielding headgear, trying to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun between 10 AM and 4 PM, wearing sunglasses, and closely monitoring any skin irregularities as ways to keep the potential for skin cancer in check.

50th Anniversary Buffalo Rodeo Opens Tonight
The 50th annual Buffalo Championship P.R.C.A. Rodeo is officially underway. Cowboys from across the country started making their way to Buffalo earlier in the week, and the preparation work at the rodeo grounds for the golden anniversary rodeo is wrapping up. Wednesday night, a rodeo kick-off pork chop feed was held on the grounds. Today, the first of 4 chuckwagon breakfasts benefiting the Wright County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol will be held. Tonight's rodeo performance gets underway at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available at the Buffalo Chamber office, at Morrie's Chrysler, and at the door.

50th Anniversary Buffalo Rodeo Special Events
There will be some special events associated with the 50th annual Buffalo Championship P.R.C.A. Rodeo when it pays a visit to Buffalo this week. A long-time favorite event will return to the downtown area when a 50th Anniversary Rodeo Parade will wind its way through several downtown streets on Saturday. The parade starts at 3 pm at the Centra Sota parking lot, then will proceed down Soo Lane, turning left on 1st Avenue, passing the Discovery Center to downtown. The parade will then turn left on Division Street, left again on 3rd Avenue heading back toward the Parkside Elementary School, eventually ending back at Centra Sota. Everyone is invited to enjoy the revival of this great event. Another traditional event will be the daily “Chuckwagon Breakfast” prepared by the Wright County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol. The rodeo breakfast is a main fundraiser for the group, which helps patrol the rodeo grounds, and also helps with various tasks such as searches. A good example is the search last year of a wooded area at Camp Friendship near Annandale which ended happily when a missing camper was found unharmed. Patrol members often train together and teach fine horsemanship techniques. The all-volunteer organization formed in 1992, and consists of 15 current members. The rodeo breakfast fundraiser will be served Thursday through Sunday mornings from 7 to 10:30 AM at the rodeo grounds. The 50th Annual Buffalo Rodeo officially begins with the Rodeo Kick-Off pork chop feed Wednesday night from 5 to 7:30 PM at the rodeo grounds.

50th Anniversary Rodeo Rolls On in Buffalo
Another perfect weather evening Friday made for a great night for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Buffalo P.R.C.A. Championship Rodeo. Crowds were in high spirits for the Friday night performance of the 50th annual rodeo in Buffalo, making it the longest running pro rodeo in the state. One of the most visible parts of the golden anniversary rodeo celebration is the “Buffalo Stampede”, the decorated life size and table top sized bison that are on display throughout the community. Sponsors paid a fee for the right to display the life size or small size bison at their place of business throughout the summer season. In September, the statues will be collected for an auction, with proceeds from the sales to help provide funds for various improvements to the rodeo grounds. Events surrounding tonight's final performance of the Buffalo Rodeo include the chuckwagon breakfast, the annual pork chop feed at Morrie's Buffalo Chrysler, a team penning competition, a 50th annual rodeo parade in downtown Buffalo, pony rides and the beef bar-b-que on the grounds prior to the rodeo, and the final rodeo performance at 7:30 PM. All ticket holders are welcome to stay for the free rodeo dance in the big tent following the rodeo. Tickets are available at the Buffalo Chamber office, Morrie's Buffalo Chrysler, and at the gate. Sunday, the rodeo weekend wraps up with the chuckwagon breakfast at 8 AM, and the open air cowboy church service at 10 AM.

Local Marine Dealer Sponsors Lake Clean-up Saturday
A local marine dealership in conjunction with the Minnesota Lakes Association will help to clean up shorelines of numerous area lakes on Saturday during the 2004 Crystal-Pierz Marine Lake Clean-up Day. The company will provide boats and trash bags for participants at pre-arranged locations to assist in clean-up of islands, lake bottoms and shorelines. Experts will be on hand to educate the public on the “3 M's”, milfoil, mussels, and motorboats, and the impact of each on the health and safety of area lakes. Volunteers will meet at the Maple Lake offices of Crystal-Pierz Marine for refreshments and instructions regarding clean-up of the lake of their choice. Participating lake associations will also be provided with their own supply of clean-up kits, bags, brochures, and posters to distribute to individuals or groups interested in hosting their own clean-up efforts. The Maple Lake location of Crystal-Pierz is one of 11 locations around the state which will participate in the clean-up day. Anyone wanting further information is encouraged to contact the dealership for more information.

Maple Lake to Seek State Development Grant
The Maple Lake City Council has given the go-ahead for application for a Small Cities Development Grant from the Minnesota Department of Trade and Economic Development. Maple Lake Chamber of Commerce President Gary Swearingen asked the council to consider the application to try to secure federal grant funds administered by DTED for a number of possible projects.
Swearingen said the City of Annandale was successful in its request for a grant of close to 900 thousand dollars last year for rehabilitation of several downtown buildings. Maple Lake City Developer John Meyer has reportedly outlined an 8-step process to evaluate needs, and write the grant application before the November 1st deadline. City officials were told however, that the grant process is very competitive, and that only 30 of 86 applicants received funding last year.

Mild Weather Provides Nice Wrap-Up for Community Celebrations
The weather shaped up just in time for a nice wrap-up for community celebrations in the Wright County area over the weekend.
The cities of Albertville and Buffalo celebrated their summer festivals throughout the week, but the weather was pretty soggy for most of the early-week events. After thunderstorms blew through the area early Friday evening however, the weather calmed down, and turned very nice for Saturday and Sunday events. Parades in both communities were well-attended in the beautiful sunshine, and Sunday, both festivals came to a conclusion with the crowning of new royalty for the coming year. For Friendly City Days, Erin Roden was crowned the new Miss Albertville, with Abbey Johnson and Katie Chalstrom crowned Princesses. Amanda Wright was named Miss Congeniality. Meanwhile in Buffalo, the new Buffalo Days royalty was crowned at the Buffalo High School Performing Arts Center. The new Miss Buffalo is Jamie Comee. Princesses are Katie Hall and Jamie Tokkesdal. There's more celebrating ahead this week, as Buffalo welcomes the 50th Annual P.R.C.A. Championship Rodeo Thursday through Saturday.

Minnesota DNR to Participate in National ATV Impact Study
Research begins today at two Minnesota sites to try to better determine how all-terrain vehicles impact uncompacted forest soils, and the erosion implications of that impact, as well as how erosion risks might be better predicted based on ATV traffic levels. The tests are a part of a 6-state study being conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Technology and Development Center in California. Researchers will conduct field studies at two sites in St. Louis County on existing portions of the Big Aspen Trail and on adjacent state forest lands currently open to ATV use. It is hoped that data gathered will assist land managers in estimating potential impacts from ATV use on public lands, as well as helping to refine ATV trail design, trail maintenance scheduling, and to highlight the importance of riding responsibly on public lands. Final published study results should be available in about a year.

Officers Mean Business When They Say 'Click It or Ticket'
Law enforcement officials weren't kidding recently when they let the public know that they would be getting serious this summer about enforcing seat belt laws. Close to 11 thousand seat belt violation tickets were issued statewide during the recent Safe & Sober May Mobilization which was conducted over the Memorial Day holiday period. Well over 300 law enforcement agencies participated in the campaign, which was supported by an extensive multi-media blitz featuring the "Click It or Ticket" slogan. Kathy Swanson, director of the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety says that those who are ticketed are not only breaking the law, they're also creating a danger for themselves and anyone else who rides with them. Nearly 600 drivers in the Wright County area were issued a warning or a ticket for various traffic violations including seat belt violations during the latest saturation patrols. Officials say on the average, two-thirds of the people who die in motor vehicle crashes in the state in a given year are not buckled up.
