Brief Severe Weather Gives Way to Nice Evening
More severe weather made a brief visit to Wright County late Friday afternoon. Severe thunderstorms roared briefly into the area around 5 pm, with some locally damaging winds, small hail, and another 1 inch plus rainfall. Several trees lost branches, and other outdoor items were tossed about in the winds which briefly topped 50 miles per hour, though no major damage was reported. The weather did settle down in time for Friday night activities to be held as scheduled in Albertville and Buffalo, where both communities are celebrating their summer festivals this weekend.

Buffalo Days 2004 Underway
Events are officially underway for Buffalo Days 2004. Mild Sunday weather got events off to a good start as the Buffalo Triathlon, the annual fly-in breakfast, classic car show, Jaycees' craft show, and the Buffalo Community Orchestra's Summer Pops concert at the Sturges Park Bandshell enjoyed good attendance. Today's only official Buffalo Days event is the Royalty Banquet at 5:30 PM at the Buffalo Evangelical Free Church. Buffalo Days continues through Sunday. Also this week, Albertville's Friendly City Days events get underway on Wednesday and run through Sunday. Keep tuned to KRWC for day to day updates on the events of the summer festivals.

Fatal Traffic Crash Believed to be Storm Related
The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a fatal collision of a car and a mini-van early this morning near the Albertville exit on Interstate 94 through Wright County. Officials say the vehicles collided in the eastbound traffic lanes. One person died as a result of the crash, while three others were taken to a hospital for treatment. No names of the persons involved have yet been released. The severe weather being experienced at the time of the crash was said to be a factor in the crash which happened around 1 AM.

Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Late President Ronald Reagan
Many Wright County residents are among Americans mourning the passing of former President Ronald Reagan, who died of pneumonia on Saturday at his California home at the age of 93. Funeral services for the former president will be held on Friday. Plans are in the works for a Minnesota observance of Regan's passing. Meanwhile, flags fly at half-staff in honor of the late president.

Freeway Crash Victim Identified
Authorities have now released the names of the people involved in a 2-vehicle traffic crash on I-94 in Albertville early Tuesday morning. The Minnesota State Patrol says 36-year-old Cruz Raplo of the Twin Cities was driving her car west in the eastbound lane when her vehicle collided head-on with an eastbound mini-van driven by 70-year-old Eugene Carlquist of Nelson, MN. Ms. Raplo was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Carlquist and two passengers in the van were taken to Mercy Medical Center in Coon Rapids with non-life threatening injuries. The collision happened near the Wright County Highway 37 exit just before 2 AM Tuesday. Authorities say the raging thunderstorm in the area at the time of the crash may have been a factor.

MPCA to Hold Public Meetings on New Water Quality Standards
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will conduct several statewide public meetings throughout the next several weeks regarding proposed changes to water quality standards. The proposed changes include adding nutrient standards for lakes, updating the mercury standard, updating standards for people who eat sport-caught fish, and implementing new phosphorus limits for wastewater discharge. The closest meetings to Wright County will be at the MPCA offices in St. Paul on Monday, June 14th from 1:30 to 4 PM, and Tuesday, June 15th from 7 to 9 PM. For more information, call the MPCA at 1-800-657-3864, or on the internet at www.pca.state.mn.us. Written comments will also be accepted through the end of June.

May Mobilization
Wright County Sheriff Gary Miller is calling the recently completed May Mobilization campaign a success. The "Click it or Ticket" campaign emphasized the importance of proper driver and passenger restraint was illustrated on June 6th when a woman's car ran off the road on County Road 35 near St. Michael, went airborne, and landed on its side. The driver, and twin infants who were properly restrained in safety seats suffered no serious injuries despite the severity of the crash. The next Safe & Sober wave will be conducted over the 4th of July holiday period, and will deal with excessive speed.

National Day of Mourning Remembering President Reagan
Wright County residents will be among all Americans taking a moment today to remember the accomplishments and contributions of the late President Ronald Reagan, who died last weekend at the age of 93 of complications from his battle with Alzheimer's Disease. The late president is credited with holding a hard line during the final days of the cold war which eventually led to the demise of the former Soviet Union, and a large reduction in nuclear weapons arsenals. Federal offices and post offices are closed today, and there will be no mail delivery. State and local governmental offices for the most part are open today.

Overnight Rains Add to Already Soggy Week
More rain in the Wright County area overnight has added insult to injury during an already wet week. 1 1/2 inches of additional rain overnight continued to keep soils in the area saturated. Though rain was steady in Wright County, it was light in comparison with parts of southern Minnesota, where 6 to 7 inch rainfalls closed some roads due to standing water and mudslides. Periodic showers continue to be in the forecast throughout the week.

Post Offices Closed, No Mail Delivery Friday
President Bush has ordered that all federal agencies close on Friday in honor of the passing of former President Reagan, who died on Saturday. For the Postal Service, that means no regular mail delivery or retail service. Mail will be collected from drop boxes in front of Post Offices and in business areas at the end of the day, though no mail will be picked up from boxes in residential areas. Regular retail and delivery service will resume on Saturday.

Power Restored to Most Areas of Wright County
Most Wright County residents now have had power restored after storms on Monday night and early Tuesday morning downed power lines and knocked-out some transformers, leaving some 65 hundred Wright-Hennepin customers without power. Wright-Hennepin officials say most customers were back on-line within two hours, while some power was still being restored throughout the day on Tuesday. The company is taking this opportunity to remind area residents that if summer storms knock down power lines near you, stay away from them, and call professionals to make repairs. Downed power lines must always be treated as if they are energized. Each year, people are seriously injured, or electrocuted by coming in contact with downed power lines after storms.

Saturday Events for Albertville Friendly City Days, Buffalo Days
Organizers of Buffalo Days and Albertville's Friendly City Days hope that the worst is over for the unsettled weather that have dampened some of the early-week activities for the community celebrations. Activities for Albertville's Friendly City Days for Saturday include many activities for the whole family in the city park through the early afternoon, NorthStar League baseball, and three groups providing live music well into the evening. Meanwhile in Buffalo, Buffalo Days events highlights include dozens of activities in Sturges Park for "Saturday In The Park", sports tournaments, great live music, the beer garden, and tonight at 6 PM, the Buffalo Days parade with 13 high school marching bands, and 100 total units. The parade will be led by this year's recipient of the Kurt Weiche Memorial Most Honored Citizen Award, Ione Olson. Ione is a longtime Buffalo businessperson and community volunteer. She and her husband, Dale, owned and operated Buffalo Drug in downtown Buffalo for decades until selling the business a few years ago. Ione has also been a longtime Buffalo Chamber of Commerce member and volunteer, and has participated in numerous activities and promotions for the city's business community for years. Tonight's parade begins at 6 PM.

Severe Storms Roar Through Overnight
Record-setting heat Monday led to some very unsettled weather in central Minnesota overnight. The temperature topped out at 93 in Wright County on Monday, while the Twin Cities recorded 95 degrees, a new record high for the 7th of June. The unusual heat and humidity spawned thunderstorms late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, including several that roared through Wright County between 2 and 3 AM. Authorities say several scattered areas lost power due to downed trees and power lines. Crews are working to restore power to all areas. Many branches were ripped from trees and most people will be doing some clean-up of miscellaneous debris that blew in from other areas during the heavy winds in excess of 50 miles per hour. Some of the storms also carried brief heavy rains and small hail. No injuries were reported, though weather was apparently a factor in a fatal traffic crash on I-94 near Albertville during the storm.

Weekend Downpours, Hail, Sun Create Interesting Mix
There was a little something for every weather taste this past weekend. More heavy rain caused some brief, localized flooding in parts of Wright County. Another 1 to 2 inches of rain poured onto already wet grounds early Saturday evening, along with some brief periods of hail in some areas. No significant damage was reported. Sunday was easily the nicest day of the spring so far, as temperatures climbed into the upper 70s to lower 80s with bright sunshine throughout the day. More unsettled weather is predicted for this week, as early June seems to be following in the trend set in May, which was among the wettest months of May ever recorded in Minnesota.
