Body of Memorial Day Drowning Victim Recovered
The body of a 20-year-old Minneapolis man who drowned in a Memorial Day boating mishap in our area was recovered Tuesday. Wright County Sheriff's Department officials say the body of Arthur Colberg was pulled from Silver Lake, about 6 miles north of Maple Lake in Silver Creek Township around 2 PM Tuesday. Authorities say that Colberg and a female companion, also 20 years old, were fishing from a canoe Monday afternoon when heavy winds apparently capsized the canoe. The pair were able to hang onto the overturned canoe and yell for help. Two boaters nearby responded and were able to bring 20-year-old Kelli Hagestuen of Sauk Rapids to shore, but when they returned for Colberg, he was no longer with the canoe. Divers searched for Colberg for several hours on Monday with no success. Hennepin County Sheriff's Department officials assisted on Tuesday with a sonar device. Officials say personal floatation devices were on board the canoe, but neither Colberg nor the young woman were wearing them at the time of the mishap.

Lake Maria Among State Parks Hosting Open Houses Sunday
Sunday is a special day for state parks throughout Minnesota. Most parks will host an open house for the day as a way for people to get better acquainted with the state's park system. Lake Maria State Park near Monticello will be among the parks participating. Park manager Mark Crawford says all vehicles will be able to enter the park without the normal permit requirements on Sunday. Camper cabins will be open for inspection, cake and beverages will be served at the park's interpretive center, games and prizes for the kids will also be offered. Visitors can also explore the park's 14 miles of hiking trails, and canoe and boat rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis at a $2 per hour charge. Crawford says Lake Maria State Park is a unique park in Minnesota in that it offers an intriguing mix of hardwood forest, wetlands, and lakes. The park is located on Wright County Highway 111, about 7 miles northwest of Monticello.

Memorial Day Drowning in Wright County
A Memorial Day fishing trip has apparently ended in tragedy, with the suspected drowning of a fisherman in Wright County. Authorities searched for 6 hours on Monday for a 20-year-old St. Cloud man who went missing after his canoe overturned in high winds around 3 pm. The man had been fishing with a 20-year-old woman on Silver Lake, which is about six miles north of Maple Lake in Silver Creek Township. Two other anglers who were fishing nearby reportedly saw the canoe capsize, and made their way through the choppy water to the pair. They were able to rescue the woman, but did not reach the man in time to save him. Witnesses were reported to say that the canoeists had life jackets with them, but were not wearing them when the craft overturned. Monday's search was hampered by the adverse weather, and the fact that the water where the canoe capsized is between 26 and 28 feet deep. Hennepin County Sheriff's Department officials will provide help when the search continues today. Divers are expected to get help from a sonar unit which could help in locating the man's body.

Repair Work Continues on Co. Rd. 75 Bridge Over I-94
Crews will continue with repair work on the County Road 75 bridge over Interstate 94 west of Monticello for the next few weeks.
The bridge was damaged last Thursday when a flatbed truck carrying a 110 thousand pound crane went off the road on westbound I-94 and the crane struck the bridge causing damage to the piers and railing. Officials with the Minnesota D.O.T. say that the shoulder of westbound I-94 at the bridge will be closed until at least June 18th as those repairs are made. The freeway itself is open, only the shoulder of the westbound lane is closed. Motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, and watch for equipment and workers.

Road Work on Highway 12
Work is expected to get underway this week on U.S. Highway 12 between the Wright County communities of Montrose and Delano. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says that maintenance crews will be working on the 7-mile segment of the highway, filling and leveling out cracks and small holes in the pavement. MN Dot officials say that the work will be done between the hours of 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM to try to avoid the majority of the morning and afternoon rush hours. Drivers are alerted to possible lane shifts and flaggers in the area during the construction hours. Officials say the work could take up to a month to complete. Too Much Rain?
Only a few weeks ago, many people in Wright County, including area farmers were hoping for some rain. After a wet second half of the month of May, some people might wonder how much is too much? Wright County's Farm Service Agency Director Kevin Bergquist says for the most part, the showers stopped just in time, and he says he doesn't expect much crop loss due to standing water. Bergquist says that a little sunshine and a warm-up would be perfect right now to help jump-start area crops. May 2004 was among the top 10 wettest months of May ever recorded in Minnesota, with 3 to 4 inches of rain coming in the last four days of the month alone.

Wet Holiday Weekend
A lot of people found themselves trying to squeeze in outdoor activities between showers and thunderstorms throughout much of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Close to 3 1/2 inches of rain fell in the Wright County area since last Friday, and showers continued overnight and into this morning in our area. Umbrellas were a common sight at many of the Memorial Day services throughout the area. The month of May closed out by being one of the top 10 wettest months of May in history in Minnesota. While many of us were hoping for some rain not too long ago, many people now can be overheard grumbling that the rain can stop for awhile.
