1st Half Property Taxes Due May 15th
A reminder to Wright County area property owners, the first half property taxes are due and payable as of tomorrow, May 15th. Since the 15th falls on a Saturday this year, property owners will get an extra working day to get payments in. Any payment presented in person, or postmarked on or before Monday, May 17th will be considered on time. The only exception is properties where the total tax amounts are $50 or less. Those taxes are due in full on or before May 15th. Persons whose property taxes are escrowed with their house payments, which is a common practice with most home loans generally don't need to worry about the deadline. If you did not receive a 2004 property tax statement, or if you have questions, contact the Wright County Auditor / Treasurer's Department at (763) 682-7572, or (763) 682-7573. |

Albertville Resident 100,000 Dollar Lottery Winner
While the weekend's big Powerball jackpot of over 200 million gathered a lot of attention, what you may not have known was an Albertville resident got a pretty handsome reward for her ticket purchases. Jennifer Chounnavong of Albertville bought three tickets for the May 8th drawing and turned one of those tickets into a 100,000 dollar winner by matching all five numbers, but not the power ball. Chounnavong was the only player in the state to win 100,000 dollars in that drawing. The odds of winning a cash prize in the Powerball lottery game are 1 in 36, chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in about 120 million, and in the case of 100,000 dollars 1 in about 3 million. |

Cystic Fibrosis Walk in Buffalo Saturday
The 2nd annual Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis will be held in Buffalo Saturday. The event benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for continuing research in battling the disease which affects some 30 thousand children and adults in the U.S.
CF is a genetic disease which causes the body to produce abnormally thick, sticky mucus which clogs the lungs, leading to life-threatening lung infections, and can obstruct the pancreas, which inhibits proper food digestion. Dawn Hammill-Oveson with Syntergy Fitness is the local chair of the event. She says that there have been some major discoveries in CF research and treatment in recent years which have been very encouraging. The Great Strides walk starts with registration at 7:30 tomorrow morning at West Pulaski Park in Buffalo, with the walk at 9 AM. All walkers, supporters, and donations of any amount are welcome. |

DNR Officials Urge Patience at Lake Accesses for Fishing Opener
Tens of thousands of Minnesotans will participate in this weekend's big game fishing opener. That often means thousands of extremely busy lake accesses across the state. Minnesota DNR officials are urging that people be patient, courteous, and helpful to each other at public lake accesses. Low lake levels could complicate boat launching on many lakes across the state, including some here in Wright County. The DNR manages some 1500 public boat access sites, while local governmental units maintain about the same number of additional accesses. No matter the weather, the fishing opener is always a very busy time on the lakes. There are more than 800 thousand boats registered in Minnesota, and over a million fishing licenses are issued each year. |

Minnesota Fishing Opener Means Busy Wright County Lakes
Close to a million Minnesotans will demonstrate their love of fishing this weekend, as the open water season on big game fish opens at midnight on Saturday. Wright County has many popular fishing destinations, and local waters will no doubt be very busy on Saturday. Anglers are reminded to carefully check all the rules, regulations, and limits as posted in the Minnesota fishing guidelines booklet distributed with fishing licenses. Fisherpersons are also asked to be courteous and patient at busy lake accesses. Boaters trailering boats from one lake to another are also required to remove all vegetation from their boats and trailers before launching into another lake to help prevent the spread of Eurasian watermilfoil and other exotic plants and pests. |

Mother's Day Storms Roar Through Central MN
Mother's Day started out warm and sunny, but finished up loud and stormy. Severe thunderstorms developed late in the afternoon as cold air collided with the warm, humid air. The storms developed in west central Minnesota, with tornadoes touching down near Willmar. Heavy straight-line winds were also associated with the storm system, downing trees and power lines, and damaging some buildings and homes. Closer to home, some large hail was reported around South Haven and Annandale, along with the heavy winds and in some cases some very heavy rain. The Wright County Sheriff's Department says 5 funnel clouds were sighted throughout the Wright County area, with some of those funnels briefly touching down. Surprisingly, there was no widespread damage from the storms, although there were isolated damage reports, including a home in Greenfield that lost a garage, and had some other structural damage. No injuries were reported. Today's weather should be much nicer with sun, and a high around 70. |

Wright County Man Injured in Fall From Hay Wagon
A celebration of an upcoming wedding turned tragic this past weekend when a Monticello man was seriously injured when he fell from a hay wagon carrying a number of party-goers. 44-year-old Thomas Liefert was a passenger on one of two flatbed hay wagons pulled by tractors in a party caravan, making stops at several local establishments. Sherburne County Sheriff's Department officials say Liefert fell from the wagon as he attempted to hand something to a passenger in the cab of the tractor pulling the wagon. Liefert suffered serious head injuries in the fall, and was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. The incident happened around 11:30 PM on Saturday on Sherburne County Road 73, near County Road 11, north of Big Lake. The Sherburne County Sheriff's Department is continuing its investigation. |
