3 Arrested on Methamphetamine Related Charges
The Wright and Sherburne County Sheriff's Departments worked together on 3 recent arrests related to methamphetamine production. Wright County investigators were conducting surveillance last week on 38-year-old Darrell Glover, which led them to the home of Glover's sister in Becker Township in Sherburne County. After Glover was arrested during a traffic stop, investigators obtained a search warrant to search the home of 52-year-old Anthony and 44-year-old Lori Gallick. Authorities found methamphetamine and all the items necessary to manufacture meth. Both individuals were arrested on aiding and abetting production of methamphetamine, 5th degree possession, and a firearms violation. Glover meanwhile was charged with manufacture of methamphetamine. Officials say the arrests are a good example of cooperation between law enforcement agencies to continue the crackdown on meth and other drugs.

Annandale Fire Truck Crashes
Annandale firefighters found themselves in a dangerous situation this past weekend, not because of the grass fire that they were on their way to battle, but because of a traffic mishap that damaged a fire truck, and momentarily trapped 5 fire crew members inside. The Annandale pumper truck was on its way to assist the Clearwater department with a grass fire shortly after 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Since the truck was on a “routine response”, it was being driven normally with no flashing lights or sirens. As the truck slowed to turn right off State Highway 24, onto County Road 39, a southbound pickup truck moved over the center line to get around a bicycle rider. The driver of the fire truck moved the truck onto the shoulder to avoid the pickup truck, but the shoulder was too soft for the heavy load, and the truck was pulled into the ditch where it struck and broke off a power pole. The energized power lines from the pole fell on the truck, and onto the ground where a small grass fire broke out. The firefighters were faced with a difficult choice. Normally, anyone trapped inside a vehicle that is in contact with power lines would want to wait for help to arrive and move the lines because of the possibility of electrocution. But in this case, with the grass fire getting larger right around them, the firemen had to jump out the passenger side of the truck where they could jump far enough so as not to come in contact with the vehicle and the ground at the same time. The Maple Lake Fire Department was called to extinguish the grass fire. Though the Annandale pumper truck sustained some damage, it was able to be driven back to the fire hall. No one was injured in the incident.

Though we haven't officially hit the summer season, many plans are already locked-in for the annual Wright County Fair. All the favorites will be back, including the demolition derby, the kiddie pedal tractor pull, midway rides, and the talent contest, plus the addition of a new ATV pull, and music from the country, old-time, and accordion music group “The Jammers.”

Dayton, Other Senators Request Grace Period on Senior Prescription Card Sign-up
Minnesota Senator Mark Dayton was one of 13 U.S. Senators who signed a letter to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson this week. The letter urges the secretary to give Medicare recipients a 30-day grace period to change their minds or change programs after enrolling in a Medicare-approved drug discount card program. The problem in the sign-up for the new program which started this week is that pricing information is not yet available for all the cards being offered. Since seniors will be locked-into any card they register for through the end of the year, Dayton says he fears that seniors could find themselves enrolled in a program only to find out later that another program might have offered a better discount for them. Dayton and Senate colleagues are asking for the grace period to give seniors a month to change their enrollment if a better suited program is found.

No Death Penalty Being Pursued in 1998 Armored Car Slaying
Federal officials say they will not seek the death penalty in the case against a metro area man who is charged in the 1998 murder of Brinks armored car guard Billy Strelow of St. Michael. The U.S. Attorney General's Office filed the notice that it would not be pursuing capital punishment in the case in U.S. District Court in the Twin Cities on Tuesday. 29-year-old Richard Oslund of Rosemount is charged with shooting Strelow outside a busy Target store in Bloomington in November of 1998 as Strelow carried cash receipts from the store to the armored car. Though Minnesota does not have the death penalty, the case did meet capital punishment guidelines under federal criteria. There was no explanation of why federal officials declined pursuit of the death penalty in the case. Oslund was arrested on the charges as he walked out of a state prison a year ago after serving time on other unrelated charges. He has denied the murder allegations.
