Rep. Borrell Avoids Trial
A State Representative from Wright County has entered a court plea that avoids a court trial that was to start today. Friday, District 19 B State Representative Dick Borrell of Waverly entered an "Alford" plea of guilty on one count of distribution of false political campaign materials related to a mailing that went out to some eleven thousand voters just days prior to the November 2002 election. With the "Alford" plea, Borrell does not admit wrongdoing, but acknowledges that based on evidence against him, a jury could find him guilty. Borrell has accepted terms forcing him to pay 15 hundred dollars to cover court costs, and issue apologies to Darren Knight and County Attorney Tom Kelly. If Borrell has no same or similar charges against him for one year, the matter will be dismissed. The charges against Borrell came after a grand jury found that claims on Borrell's literature stating that write-in opponent Darren Knight had been charged by Wright County Attorney Tom Kelly for defamatory remarks and false campaigning were untrue. |
