DFL'ers Make Major Economic Proposals
Minnesota DFL'ers have taken aim at several areas that they feel need improvement in helping outstate Minnesota's economy to recover. House DFL leader Matt Entenza says Democrats feel help in getting Minnesota to be more self-sufficient in energy, a more equitable distribution of transportation funding, and incentives to boost job creation in outstate Minnesota are critical in getting the state's rural areas back on their feet. DFL'ers made the recent proposals saying they believe Governor Pawlenty and the Republican controlled Minnesota House have adopted policies that boost the metro, but ignore greater Minnesota.

District 877 Bond Referendum Public Meetings Continue Tonight
Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose school district officials will continue with the second of three informational meetings tonight regarding the bond referendum vote next week. Voters in the district will be asked whether or not the district should go ahead with a 42.5 million dollar bond package which would fund construction of a new elementary school in Buffalo, along with numerous upgrades at other district schools. The second of three public meetings will be held tonight at the Montrose Elementary school. A final meeting will be held tomorrow evening at the Hanover Elementary school. All meetings are scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM.

Drought Does In Crops
Hot sun and no rain for weeks in Wright County has caused most farmers in the area to essentially throw in the towel on hopes for big crops this year. Wright County F.S.A. Director Kevin Bergquist says crops all over the county have suffered from the lack of rain, and each day that goes by, the outlook gets a little worse. Bergquist says rain now would probably be too little, too late, but might help to at least salvage what crop development had taken place before the dry weather began.

Federal Dollars for Water and Wastewater Upgrades
New federal dollars could help some outstate Minnesota communities bring their infrastructure systems up to date. Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman recently announced a new 1 million dollar grant from the U.S. Health & Human Services Department that could help communities with low tax bases to modernize their water and waste water systems. The grant monies will be administered by the Midwest Assistance Program state offices in New Prague.

New Central Minnesota Arts Board Director Named
A former Minnesota lawmaker is the new interim director of the Central Minnesota Arts Board. Former State Representative Leslie Schumacher of Princeton was named to the post after the resignation of former director Charles Gilliam. Schumacher had worked as a public relations specialist for the board from March through June. She will head the board while a search continues for a permanent director. The C.M.A.B. has come under fire in recent months for allegations of open meeting law violations and possible improprieties by its past director, but the board will be allowed to continue its work of distribution of state grants for artists, schools, and arts groups in Benton, Sherburne, Stearns, and Wright Counties.

Summer 2003, That's a Wrap
Most Minnesotans are enjoying the final summer holiday of the year today as the country recognizes Labor Day 2003. Union rallies and other worker-oriented gatherings are planned, but most Minnesotans are spending the day with family and friends as the day marks the unofficial end of summer. Federal, state, county, and city offices are closed today. Post offices are closed, as are most banks, but most retailers are open for business as usual today. Tuesday will be a return to normal life for many as the vast majority return to work and students return to classes.
